Since its inception, Concentrol has been committed to research and development of new solutions to meet the needs of the sector. This involves a process of testing the effectiveness and profitability of our products in the laboratory. In the present study, we have verified the antifoaming and deaerator efficacy of the antifoaming agent EMULTROL DFM AFO-1, an alternative to OLM-17.

To determine deaeration efficiency, in the short and long term of the antifoaming agents studied, microfoam tests based on the agitation method have been carried out. The medium used was PLIODISP® 7215, an aqueous dispersion made up of copolymers of vinyl acetate and VeoVa®, (vinyl ester of versatic acid), supplied by OMNOVA SOLUTION.

EMULTROL DFM AFO-1 is an aqueous mineral oil emulsion and an effective alternative to OLM-17, which is based on non-emulsified mineral oils.

Methodology

To perform the antifoaming test, a quantity of 200g of PLIODISP® 7215 is measured in a 1000ml beaker, followed by a dosage of 0.2-0.4% antifoaming agent. Then, the preparation is vigorously stirred with a mechanical shaker at 1300 rpm for 5 minutes. Immediately afterwards, the density of the preparation is measured to measure the percentage of drained air. The same antifoaming test is repeated with an aged sample that is kept at 45 °C for 7 days.

Results

Table 2. The % of entrained air is calculated from the density resulting from the preparations after the microfoam test, carried out with the studied antifoaming agents in additions of 0.2% and 0.4%.

CONCLUSION

The emulsion antifoaming agent EMULTROL DFM AFO-1 has been shown to be significantly more effective as a antifoaming agent and deaerator in a vinyl acetate / VeoVa® dispersion, and a valid alternative to the antifoaming agent OLM -17.

At Concentrol we are in a constant process of studying our solutions to verify their effectiveness and the proper functioning of the product. Only through key processes such as testing and reviewing our solutions can we craft the best responses to customer needs.
