At Concentrol’s Additives divisions we work on the production of tackifying resins that meet our customers’ needs. These products are essential for application in pressure sensitive adhesives, tapes and labelling.

Apart from the usual resin dispersions (tackifiers) of rosin, phenolic terpene or hydrocarbon, there are other types of resin dispersions created precisely by combining the above: they belong to the range of hybrid dispersions.

Resin tackifiers are obtained by modification of a base resin that can have different origins. Once the resin has been modified, it is solubilised in water using emulsifying agents, until an aqueous-based dispersion of resin is obtained.

Types of modified resins

  • Esterified resins: of vegetable origin, derived from different kinds of pine or conifers. They are obtained by esterification reactions.
  • Acid resins: of vegetable origin, derived from different types of pine or conifers. They are obtained by stabilization reactions to avoid oxidation and aging of the resin.
  • Hydrocarbon resins: they come from substances derived from petroleum, by polymerization and also by hydrogenation process to clarify them.
  • Terpene phenolic resins: resins derived from substances of vegetable origin, from the Pinaceae and Rutaceae (citrus) families. They are obtained by polymerization reactions of monomers based on terpenes (mono terpenes) that are subsequently modified to obtain terpene phenolic resins.

Hybrid dispersions

Tackifiers or hybrid dispersions are made up of two different types of resin that are unified in a specific and determined phase during the manufacturing process. There are several types of options for this product depending on its composition and use.

Hybrid dispersions may be made of esterified rosin resins derived from hydrocarbons and terpene phenolic resins.

The main advantage of hybrid dispersions is that we can obtain the best adhesive properties and characteristics provided by each class of resin separately, that is, in a single product.

These are unique dispersions for specific applications depending on the characteristics that are needed. They are commonly used in specialty applications as opposed to typical esterified resins for PSA, adhesive tapes and labels.

Emultrol E-55

One of our most prominent hybrid resin dispersion solutions is Emultrol E-55, formed by an aggregation of an esterified resin together with a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin.

It is a very versatile product, presenting very good compatibility with different polymers. It can be used in multiple applications, from PSA adhesives to specific applications of each manufacturer, showing good balance in all its final properties.

Emultrol E-55 has several properties that make it an efficient, safe and versatile product:

  • Good compatibility with a wide range of synthetic polymers, acrylics, SBR, polychloroprene …
  • Good thermal and UV stability
  • Good resistance to moisture
  • Contains no solvents or APEO
  • Provides better cohesion to the final adhesive
  • Good performance at high temperatures
  • Good resistance to shear
  • Improves adhesion on polyethylene, polypropylene and plastic packaging substrates in general
  • Very good wetting on non-porous surfaces
