Obtaining the best solutions for the industrial sector is always a great challenge, since the most innovative and specialized products are needed for professionals in the sector.

That is why at Concentrol, along with the quality of our products, we also offer innovation in each of our solutions, since we have our own laboratories and a large team of professionals. From the wide variety of products that we find in the Concentrol catalogue for industrial sectors, we have antifoaming agents, resin dispersions, humectants, wax emulsions, silicone and other complementary products.

In the two studies that we will see below, we will verify the deaeration efficiency in decorative paint, after the addition of the antifoam EMULTROL DFM OL-4 and the deaeration capacity of EMULTROL DFM OL-4 in the EMULTROL CA-2265 V wax emulsion.

  • DEAERATION STUDY IN DECORATIVE PAINTING WITH EMULTROL DFM OL-4 IN POST ADDITION

For the first study, post-addition deaeration tests have been carried out, that is, the defoamer has been added once the foam is formed, in addition to compatibility tests. Using an ethylvinylacetate (EVA) -based decorative paint as the medium in the study.

Of the different lines of antifoams tested for this study, EMULTROL DFM OL-4 has been shown to be the most effective deaerator in post-addition, due to its high deaeration capacity and its high compatibility in the application. The EMULTROL DFM OL-4 reference is composed of a mixture of white mineral oils and hydrophobic particles.

PROCESS

  1. Deaeration test:

200g of air-entrained paint is weighed into a 1000 mL container, adding 5% osmotized water and a dose of 0.1% antifoaming agent. The preparation is shaken gently with a mechanical shaker at 130 rpm, for 1 minute. The density of the preparation is then measured to determine the final density of entrained air. Finally, the density and the final aesthetic finish of the preparation without antifoam and the preparation with EMULTROL DFM OL-4 are compared.

        2.Compatibility test:

1 mL of each preparation is applied on a glass surface, using a spiral application bar, Mayer type, 60 µm thick to carry out the extension. After drying, the paint extensions with and without antifoam are compared.

RESULTS

If we compare the densities, it can be seen in Table 1 that the final density of the preparation with 0.1% antifoam agent EMULTROL DFM OL-4 shows a higher density compared to the preparation without antifoam agent. Therefore, a higher density indicates a lower air content within the paint.

Test Antifoaming dose  (%) Density  (g/ml)
Control 1.26
EMULTROL DFM OL-4 0.1 1.28

Table 1. The different tests with the respective dose of added antifoam are shown, as well as the density of the preparation measured after the deaeration test.

Comparison test of paint surface aesthetics

It can be seen in the photograph on the left that the preparation without antifoam agent shows the presence of entrapped air in the form of macro and microfoam. While in the photograph on the right, the presence of macro or microfoam is not observed.

Control EMULTROL DFM OL-4

Table 2. Photographs of the preparations are shown after performing the deaeration test. On the right without antifoam agent and on the left with antifoam agent EMULTROL DFM OL-4.

Regarding the paint spreading test to compare the compatibility of the antifoam. No differences are observed between the spread of paint, with or without antifoam agent.

Photograph 1. Two paint spreads are shown, on the left the one with 0.1% EMULTROL DFM OL-4 and on the right the one without added antifoaming agents.

CONCLUSION

The EMULTROL DFM OL-4 product shows a great post-addition deaeration capacity, since it eliminates the visible foam of the final paint and increases its final density. In turn, the antifoam agent shows good compatibility with the paint because it does not cause secondary effects on the application such as unevenness, craters and / or pinholes.

  • STUDY OF DEAIRING CAPACITY OF EMULTROL DFM OL-4 IN EMULTROL CA-2265 V WAX EMULSION

Next, the study carried out to verify the deaeration capacity of EMULTROL DFM OL-4 in the EMULTROL CA-2265 V wax emulsion is presented.

PROCESS

In a 1000 mL container, 200g of EMULTROL CA-2265 V are weighed, a dose of 0.2% of antifoam agent is added. The preparation is vigorously stirred with a mechanical shaker at 1300 rpm, for 5 minutes. The density of the preparation is then measured to determine the density of entrained air.

RESULTS

As can be seen, the preparation stirred intensely with the antifoam EMULTROL DFM OL-4 shows a final density higher than the preparation stirred without antifoam.

Product Dose Density (g/ml)
Control 0,80
EMULTROL DFM OL-4 0,2% 0,91

Table 1. Densities of wax emulsion preparations with and without antifoam are shown.

Graph 1. The densities of the wax emulsion preparation with and without antifoam are shown.

CONCLUSION

The product EMULTROL DFM OL-4 is shown as a good deaerator in post-addition of wax emulsions.
